Day seven walking- Staithes to Whitby 12 miles
Woke up this morning and it was glorious sunshine with a stiff breeze. Chilly but not too cold
Accommodation came with breakfast so we ate well, and hit the trail. First thing on order was the climb out of the harbor and back up on to the cliffs. Walking out of town, we had to go around Dog Loup road as it’s the narrowest road in England, and with our packs on, it was a no go.

It was only about 1.5 hours to the town of Port Musgrave which we walked through and headed to Runswick Bay where we stopped and had a coffee and Bacon Bun .
Seeing as we were now at sea level, we got to walk along the beach itself for awhile, past the sailing club and past the natural caves in the cliffs, known as Hob Holes, from here we had to find a narrow gully which was the start of the climb back to the cliff top.

Off to Sandsend, where we were supposed to stop, but the next town is Whitby, and in Whitby is the voted, best fish and chip restaurant in England,,, and I want some.
From Sandsend to Whitby was all beach, 3 mile of sand, sure it was a challenge, but it wasn’t a hill.
And went into the town, it was a rude change, as we were used to quiet and tranquil, this was like Vegas meets Santa Monica, with the lights on, and people everywhere’s.
Took a while to find our hotel, after a walk around the harbor, then we took a rest before going out for dinner. Can’t wait.
Whitby is normally about 13000 in population, not huge, but holiday time sees it grow like crazy, certainly days like today that has lots of day visitors from nearby towns.
Originally, it was a whaling town , very successful , originally having the use of only two whaling ships, the Whitby Whaling Co left on their first whaling expedition to Greenland with nothing more than a bunch of amateur local fishermen, and plenty of good will , in 1837.
It’s sits in the mouth of the River Esk, and although busy, is very still very pretty.
TRENCHERS, voted the best fish and chips in England. Had to see for myself, and I was not disappointed.
We had a sea food chowder that was fantastic, and a serving of fish and chips (cod), and MB had a small fish and salad (haddock),,,,,,, excellent.

It’s raining now, hope tomorrow is sunny again, even though it’s a very short haul to Robin Hood Bay.
