Day six of walking-Saltburn to Staithes 8 miles

Today was supposed to be an 18 mile day, but the weather is a challenge, and we have time, so we are splitting it up and extending the walk by a day.

It’s a chilly day with a strong wind coming off the North Sea at 53 degrees, about 12 c.

Waiting for her sailor

Walking down to the beach and behind the Ship Hotel, then up onto the cliffs in the background
Rained last night, but today it’s the cold wind that’s our nemesis, the first climb was all steps and when you gave 40 mph wind gusts, it’s one thing, but there is a thing called “ apparent wind speed”,

and that’s the power of the wind after it accelerates up the cliff face, which is where we had to go.

Some kind person laid these all along the path, they obviously knew
There were times it was really difficult to stay on the path, the cliffs ranged from 150 ft, to about 300 ft high, so we were happy the wind was blowing on shore.
Heading down to the beach to approach Skinningrove village

It was when we were this close to the edge, that it got tricky

A Guibal Fanhouse, with a old railroad station in the back
This tiny fishing village , we thought, would have a cafe, nope!!!!

Fishermens cabins

Walking the beach through the sea wall opening to Skinningrove harbor.

From here it was 4 miles to our night stop in a quaint harbor town of Staithes
We stayed pretty warm, even though it blew all day, and quite honestly, we loved the day
Coming into Staithes, we learned that it was a huge quarry area in the old days, mining Alum. Today it’s still a mining area, for Potash, and this area supplies the whole of the UK with winter road salt. I had a long chat with the miner at the “ bait table”, I learned that we were walking Obote the mine which has over 621 miles of tunnel way beneath us, some of the tunnels extending 4.3 miles out from the coastline, and under the North Sea.

The walk into town was welcome and we toured the harbor before finding a warm pub to hide in, turns out that this is the pub we were booked into anyway, soooo, fish and chips please

Home for the night

Had a great lunch, now off fir a shower and at nap
Down to the “ Cod and Lobster” for dinner

Steak and ale pie

Mussels in garlic cream sauce

Time to head home to watch real football
